Movie#15 The Losers

It has been a long time since I watched a decent action movie. When I saw this title, I didn't hesitate.
A pretty decent action movie from characters of DC comic series. It is not great though but decent. I usually get irritated by action heroes trying to be cool by passing 'supposedly jokes' in the middle of a serious action event. In this one the trend continues, but surprisingly I didn't feel any irritation. Maybe the wits were apt for the script.
The special effects are good and the fight sequences are enjoyable to watch. I didn't move away from the TV from start to finish. There are some indigestible parts in the movie, such as the heroes tend to produce (have access) high end gadgets at will. They are fugitives and the mysterious female (Zoe Seldana–  liked her in Avatar..nice figure) helps them to achieve their goal and seems to have vast amount of wealth in her account (how else she gives them these weapons at will). Maybe it is because this movie is a comic book adaptation and so no questions 'will be entertained'.
Anyway my rating will be 3.5 out of 5…enjoy

Movie#14 Unthinkable

This one is a wonderfully made thriller. The film questions the morals and ethics of human torture and in the end, it is left to us to decide whether torturing is a necessary evil.
Starring Samuel L Jackson and Carrie-Anne Moss, the story oscillates between good and evil. It makes us think that what was good and what was evil, all comes down to the situational perspective. Wonderfully directed with tension arising from the start and running through the very end, it is must watch in my opinion. It poses the same amount of questions to the protectors of a constitution and to the human rights activists.
As commons, we are forced to choose sides. Each side is right in its own ways of thinking. In the end how do we know that whether we had selected the correct side? Well, in my opinion, it will the winners who will always claim to be the righteous one. Every action can cause grievance to certain individuals and it is not possible to wait till everyone is appeased. Everything is a 'roll of the dice'. If one end up winning, the winner can rewrite the history justifying their actions while the loser is termed as 'evil'. Isn't this what is happening now?..Think…
My rating is 4 out of 5

Movie#13 She's Out of My League

Why I chose this? Well I wanted to unwind the night as the next day was my off day. I didn't have any mood to watch any serious stuff, so I chose this. And I think I somewhat made a good choice too…
A fairly good romantic comedy. The storyline is simple–  Big time rich girl falls in love with a small time boy. Things crop up as expected from such relationship but their friends are there to guide them through and in the end everything is as it should be. The ending could have been made differently with a little bit more 'oompf' factor but not bad either.
The acting has nothing to brag about. It has its rough edges but when you look at the complete picture, it is a very satisfying one.
The director could have made this into a family movie but there are a couple of scenes where it reminded me of Something About Mary. Anyway, the rating I shall give for this entertainer is 2.5 out of 5
Enjoy everyone…

Movie#12 Kites (Hindi)

There goes myself with the 2nd  hindi movie in a row. This one stars Hrithik Roshan and a Mexican heroine, Barbara Mori. It also has a number of prominent Indian stars, among them my favourite Indian heroine (not based on her acting, solely)–  Kangana Ranaut.
There are 2 versions available. The real uncut version with all the hoopla for Indian goers and the critically acclaimed edited version of Brett Ratner. The latter one specifically made for international audiences with the songs and melodrama cut out.
After reading all the reviews I could get, I decided I should go for the 'cut' version. But as in the movie's underlying theme of 'fate decides', I got hold of only the 'pure' version. So with all skepticism watched it and HOW MISTAKEN I WAS…
I was just taken aback by the effort put in this movie by everyone involved. So beautifully taken and to me its simply a BEAUTIFUL movie. The vividness of colour, the acting by everyone, the story line, the songs, the dances, the car chases, the action and the ending…all simply awesome. So folks don't miss this one. After watching this, I don't think I want to watch the 'cut' version but I shall watch this again for it is worth it.
My personal rating…3.5 out of 5

Movie#11 Baadmash Company (Hindi)

For those of you who haven't heard about bollywood, I shall say a few words about it prior to any comments on the movie.
Bollywood is the 'knock off' product of hollywood. The film fraternity of India looked with stars in their eyes to the glitter and glamour of hollywood. The media too helped with stories of hype and high end life style there. Then they decided, very un– creatively, to ape the life style which they thought would make them equal. With the lifestyle, they also copied the name, shamelessly. So to this day, they proudly refer to their farternity as 'bollywood' without bothering how shameless they seem in the eyes of hollywood. Thats the long story short…
I'm not a fan of bollywood movies. I can easily guess which direction the movie is flowing by watching the initial 15 minutes. The editing is utterly rubbish, I should say in a majority of the movies. I prefer to watch a certain Khan's movie without thinking twice. His latest one has been a hit called 3 Idiots. As for the others, I carefully pick after reading all available reviews because I can't be bothered to spend my precious time on earth watching rubbish. And this is one movie I chose after lot of deliberation and it didn't disappoint.
I wont say a well made movie but I shall say that it was a worthy watchable one. Nice story line and enjoyable. The movie is fast paced and time flies. Nice songs and a happy ending. This movie has surely made my day. I was surprised to say that lot of taboo had been crossed by this movie such as smooching and love making scenes (no nudity..ok).
Personal rating for this one will be 2.5 out of 5

Movie#10 The Messenger

I appreciate the way hollywood goes about finding good storyline from themes considered least attractive. Such is the story in this movie.
This one stars Woody Harrelson, who I consider to be a worthy actor to watch. The story is about a injury recovered marine who gets assigned to bringing the bad news of a soldier's death to his/her first of kin. He gets instruction from his superior in this business (WH) about the pitfalls of such situation, such as, transference and counter-transference (psychological terms–  please google to find about). But he disregards because of his own mental state that craved for 'care and be cared'.
A nice drama shot with a limited budget. The film also stars many well known actors and actresses. The pace of the story is slow but never dull. It brings to notice the stress in jobs that could be considered by many as 'relaxed'. The mental battering these messengers go through going about their job is well brought out.
My personal rating is 2.5 out of 5

Movie#9 Youth in Revolt

A must watch for teen movie fans. It shows the extent to which a teen can go to claim the love of a girl. In the end it left me thinking whether he was actually seeking out love or vying for a chance to lose his virginity.
The movie starts in a great way. You shall observe it when you watch it. The dialogues are crisp and hilarious and narrative at the beginning. The casting is apt for such a movie. The hero (Michael Cera) nicely gets into character of a helpless, 'invisible' and bored teen. When he finally meets the girl he thinks he loves, he goes all out for me. To counter his shortcomings, he projects his alter ego and overcomes obstacles. The same alter ego also lands him in trouble. The girl uses her beauty to mesmerize him and uses him to achieve her dream. When he finally realizes that he was taken for a ride, he takes revenge on her. And finally everything is reconciled and he fulfills his dream/desire/goal.
Don't get me wrong. All the situations are portrayed hilariously and the spice is topped by his temporary Indian friend, Vijay Joshi (Adhir Kalyan). All said, this is worth the watch if you can get hold of this.
Personal rating would be 2.5 out of 5

Movie#8 A Single Man

This movie is directed by Tom ford and stars Collin Firth and Julianne Moore. I chose this one to see because I like both Collin and Julianne and consider them among my favourites as actors.
This movie has its attractions and disappointments. As a warning, do not watch this movie when you are in a happy mood and wants to relax the time away watching something to stimulate senses. You will be utterly disappointed by this for such as occasion. Rather this film would suit a sober atmosphere when you are not getting sleep and want to vile your time while slowly sinking to sleep.
A well taken slow movie with an almost obvious ending. Those who are prejudiced towards gay trait, please be warned and stay away. The views are superb with double meaning dialogues which could tire your brains easily and induce sleep..lol. I took around three sittings to finish the movie. It destroyed my initial sitting because I expected something else but helped me to sleep in the latter two.
Personal rating…2 out of 5

Movie#7 Valhalla Rising

I wish I could explain to you what I saw but I have no idea. Usually I turn off the TV when I understand that I'm understanding nothing. But not this one. I can't explain what, maybe its the music or it may be the scenic location or maybe just curiosity about how the director is going to end this one.
I started watching this because as I had explained in one of my earlier posts that I liked medieval storyline. This seemed like one, Viking, to be precise. So I got ready with snacks to see some battle scenes and raw life style. I should say that I got to see the latter but not the kind of fights I expected. But still I kept seeing. The movie has something to keep the attention riveted to it but unless you are an extreme movie buff, you may not understand anything. If the director meant only to convey the superficial stuff, then i got it but if he had a hidden message within, I missed it completely.
Nothing to comment about the actors as I'm not familiar with any of them. Maybe I have had seen movies of many of them but the costume department did a fantastic job in making them all strangers.
My personal rating….2.5 out of 5

Movie#6 Solomon Kane

This movie stars James Purefoy. The story is that of a warrior, who was banished by his father, find the path to redemption after he almost lost his soul to the devil.
I'm a fan of mythical movies especially that happens during medieval era. I like the times when men wore dresses over dresses and shower rarely. Always gets me to wonder how they pulled through with the ladies with so much strong body odour. It is not that women were clean but since they were not given prominent roles in majority of the films, I couldn't observe them properly. But their dresses look so congested, I should say.
This movie is one such movie. It always rains and the ground is so muddy and yuck! But still people lived 'happily' until they get attacked by minions of a devil lord. The hero get dragged into the conflict while he was lying low, thanking God for the time he narrowly missed losing his soul to the devil. You will see that it is a straight forward storyline. The flash backs keep happening till story aligns itself at the end to completion. Special effects are not upto the mark but enjoyable. Too much gore for young children though.
My personal rating will be 2 out of 5…

Movie#5 Ong Bak 3

Yes, those who are fans of this series from Thailand, guessed it right. The third of the Ong Bak series starring the same actor Tony Jaa. Well, I'm neither a die hard fan of this series nor the actor but watched it because I had watched the 1st  part. Liked it only for the stunts only and this one has not disappointed even though will not live up to the fame of the 1st  .
As for the interest and information for the movie buffs, this is a Thai action movie. So, be sure to watch it with subtitle. The story line is not very complicated. The mythical hero settling score with a mythical villain and this story is a continuation of the events that took place in part 2. Majority of the movie runs out with the hero's preparation for the final showdown.
As the hollywood is crazy about cars and girls, here the interest is towards elephants. Maybe because of the Thai culture, all series have prominent 'elephant' roles. I haven't yet watched the 2nd  part yet but not intending to anytime soon. I'm thinking of stopping with the 3rd  part because it has become boring. NOTHING NEW TO OFFER .
I suggest to everyone that you should watch this for the film set  and action only. My personal rating will be 2 out of 5

Movie#4 I Love You Phillip Morris

What will I say about this movie? It is a must see for all the movie lovers out there. I started with some idea from a synopsis I read from IMDB.com. It said that this was a gay movie. With all the prejudice towards gay people, I took a risk in watching this just because this starred Jim Carrey and Ewan Mcgregor. Turned out that I totally missed the point. This movie is not a 'gay' movie pre se, but a wonderful entertainer.
It has gay scenes, swindling, outright comedy and laughs. I really enjoyed it. Running for 1 hr and 33 mins with the credits part included, this movie was worth the watch.
My personal rating will be a 3 out of 5 for this one. Enjoy everyone…

Movie#3 The Spy Next Door

Well, this is my third movie since this blog started. I don't know where and what to start about this movie. If I can summarize this movie in one word for you who are yet to see–  AVOID!
To start a small topic about this movie, I should start by saying that this was the first movie in which Mr Jackie Chan had got some dialogues to say and he really suck. Maybe he is getting old and found that it is easy to go with dialogues than action sequences.
This movie might appeal to kids but to adults this would be a drag. You would be constantly checking out 'time left' in your player after the first 5 minutes. The story has nothing to offer new other than non-typical Jackie Chan (that is him with less action and more talk)
So my personal rating for this movie is 1 out of 5…
Try at your own risk

Movie#2 Dear John

Got this one last night and watched it.
The movie starts as a romantic drama and the initial 30 mins or so were very dull. The usual storyline expected from a romantic story. I personally don't prefer Channing Tatum because of the slouched gait but he has pulled through fine in this one. Amanda Seyfried  seem 'dead' in this one. I loved her in the movie Mama Mia! but here it is definitely no-no.
I like the picturesque locations of romantic movies and this one hasn't let down in the area. Since I prefer l to see 'green' around, the movie scored well there.
As the movie gets into in the serious stuff in a relationship between a middle class special forces sergeant and a well to do family civilian girl, our attention is caught in the slow build up of tension. But as a person who is unaccustomed to western outlook to a love relationship, I couldn't really relate to the story that was unfolding. The director meant the theme to be one of sacrificial in nature but it brought me think that this might be how we could relate to love “also”. Towards the end of the movie, I began to admire the decisions the characters took in the story
My personal rating of this movie is 2.5 out of 5.

Movie#1 NINE

Hey I watched this movie last night. I had an idea that this was a musical when I started watching it.
The movie stars a hoard of actors (mainly 1 actor and many actresses). Naming some of the are Daniel Day Lewis, Sophia Lauren, Nicole Kidman, Judy Dench, Penelope Cruz, Fergie and Kate Hudson.
Anyone who loves watching movies, I suggest this as a must see. The movie flows with no hiccups. The music is great and the dances are whoopie! The story line is available at IMBD.com. For others who watch movies for the action sequences, special effects and spicy content, this could turn out to be boring outing
The dialogues are easy to grasp during majority of the movie but if you want the grasp the spicy content in the songs, you may need to watch it with subtitles. The movie possesses a magnetic attraction which would help the keep the viewers' attention throughout.
I shall give this movie a personal rating of 3.5 out of 5. I recommend this movie to all the movie buffs out there…
